چکیده

Depth map images are characterized by large homogeneous areas and strong edges. It has been observed that efficient compression of the depth map is achieved by applying a down-sampling operation prior to encoding. However, since high resolution depth maps are also needed for depth-based 3D coding tools, such as view synthesis prediction, an upsampling method that is able to recover the loss of information is needed within this coding framework. In this paper, we analyze the impact of depth resampling on view synthesis quality and its interaction with other 3D coding tools, and propose an optimized combination of downand up-sampling techniques for overall coding performance improvement. View synthesis with the resampled depth maps show the efficiency of our approach. Fast Intra Mode Decision for Depth Map coding in 3D-HEVC Standard

three dimensional- high efficiency video coding (3D-HEVC) is the expanded version of the latest video compression standard, namely high efficiency video coding (HEVC), which is used to compress 3D videos. 3D videos include texture video and depth map. Since the statistical characteristics of depth maps are different from those of texture videos, new tools have been added to the HEVC standard fo...

Low-complexity depth map compression in HEVC-based 3D video coding

In this paper, a low-complexity algorithm is proposed to reduce the complexity of depth map compression in the high-efficiency video coding (HEVC)-based 3D video coding (3D-HEVC). Since the depth map and the corresponding texture video represent the same scene in a 3D video, there is a high correlation among the coding information from depth map and texture video. An experimental analysis is pe...

Fast Mode Decision for 3D-HEVC Depth Intracoding

The emerging international standard of high efficiency video coding based 3D video coding (3D-HEVC) is a successor to multiview video coding (MVC). In 3D-HEVC depth intracoding, depth modeling mode (DMM) and high efficiency video coding (HEVC) intraprediction mode are both employed to select the best coding mode for each coding unit (CU). This technique achieves the highest possible coding effi...

Motion Vector Sharing and Bitrate Allocation for 3D Video-Plus-Depth Coding

The video-plus-depth data representation uses a regular texture video enriched with the so-called depth map, providing the depth distance for each pixel. The compression efficiency is usually higher for smooth, gray level data representing the depth map than for classical video texture. However, improvements of the coding efficiency are still possible, taking into account the fact that the vide...

Studying Platelet-Based Depth Map Coding

The multi-view plus depth (MVD) format is a promising representation approach for 3D and free viewpoint video systems as it allows synthesizing more views at the decoder than those explicitly coded at the encoder. This format represents each view of a visual scene with both texture (array of color pixels) and a depth map which provides information about the 3D scene geometry. Thus, for the tran...
